For example, an if/else statement might check whether the value stored in a certain variable matches some value: ‘if (variable==value) { do something; } else { do something else; }’.

An array is a special type of data structure used in Java which enables you to store one or more values of the same type in one collection. Arrays come in handy when you need to store multiple values of the same data type without having to define multiple variables for each value.

Collections are used to store multiple instances of an object in one collection. The Java collection framework includes interfaces such as List, Set and Map as well as classes such as ArrayList and HashMap that implement these interfaces. Each Collection type comes with its own set of features and syntax.

Exploring Inheritance and Polymorphism in Java

Inheritance is a key concept of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) which enables developers to reuse code by creating parent classes that store common attributes and behaviour which can then be inherited by child classes. This reduces complexity and prevents the duplication of code.

Polymorphism enables objects to take on multiple forms depending on the context in which they are used. In Java, polymorphism can be achieved using interfaces, abstract classes or constructor overloading.

Using Exceptions to Handle Errors in Java

Programming errors are inevitable when developing software applications. To minimize their impact on application performance, it’s recommended that developers use exceptions to handle errors in Java applications.

An exception represents an abnormal condition that can arise during the execution of program code. When an exception occurs in the program code the program will throw an exception which must be handled by wrapping it within a try/catch block of code which will execute certain logic depending on the type of exception thrown.

Working with Databases and Files Using JDBC and I/O Streams

Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) is an API used in Java to access databases such as Oracle or MySQL. JDBC enables developers to connect with databases, execute SQL statements, retrieve results from queries and make changes to databases.

In addition to working with databases, developers also need to work with files such as text files or images in their programs. To do this they need to use I/O Streams which are used to read from or write to files on disk.

Understanding Multithreading in Java

Multithreading is the ability of a program or process to execute multiple threads concurrently using the same CPU core or multiple cores if present. Threads allow developers to increase throughput by executing multiple tasks simultaneously on different cores.

In Java, threads are created using the Thread class. Threads must also implement the Runnable interface which provides the code necessary to run the thread.

Although we have explored some of the basic features of Java here, there are many more advanced features available from the language such as Generics which enable developers to manipulate collections by specifying type parameters for objects stored in collections. Lambda expressions which enable developers to write functions without explicitly declaring them. Reflection which enables programs to access internal elements at runtime which makes metaprogramming much easier.
